Stuffie Patrol

By Justin Kleckner

“And they all lived happily ever after, the end,” Joshua’s mom closed the book, placing it on the bookshelf next to his bed. “Now, it’s time for a certain someone to go to sleep, okay?” Joshua nodded, and she walked towards the door. “Goodnight sweetheart,” his mom said to him as she turned off the light in his room. “I’ll see you in the morning, okay?”

“Okay mommy,” Joshua said as he pulled his blanket up close to his chin. She smiled and began closing the door behind her. “Mommy?” She peaked back through the bedroom door.

            “What is it?”

“Can you look under the bed for monsters?” His mom chuckled, shaking her head.

“Hun, you know that there are no such things as monster,” she replied, closing the door even more. “Now go to bed, you’ll be fine, okay?”

“Okay mommy,” Joshua replied. She shut the door, and the room was soon filled with darkness. Joshua grabbed his teddy bear, holding it close to him as he lay there in the dark. “You’ll protect me, right?” Joshua made it nod his head, and he hugged it close. “Thank you, Teddy,” Soon, Joshua felt his eyes begin to close, and he was soon fast asleep. As soon as Joshua had fallen asleep, Teddy lifted his head, looking around the room. He carefully wiggled out of Joshua’s grasp, and waddled down to end of the bed, where he grabbed a small wooden sword and a small wooden shield from under the mattress. Teddy then walked back over to where Joshua was asleep, and plopped down next to him. Teddy heard a shuffling of fabric from behind him, and turned to see Gilbert the Dragon waddle up next to him, and plopped down as well. Teddy waved a stuffed paw at Gilbert, and Gilbert waved a stuffed clawed foot in return. Teddy flexed his stuffed arms, and Gilbert began to giggle, but quickly stopped when they heard a noise coming from the closet. They both jumped up, and faced the closet doors, Teddy with his wooden sword and shield, and Gilbert with his claws and fire. The door handle slowly began to open, and a hand with long, pale fingers reached out from inside the closet. The hand was followed by a long pale arm, which was followed by the rest of the body, and soon Teddy and Gilbert were face-to-face with a vampire. His black hair was slicked back, shining in the pale moonlight. His eyes were as dark as coal, and his fangs were sharp and slightly stained with blood.

“Ahhhh, I suppose you two are this boys Stuffy Patrol?” the vampire said, his voice smooth and seductive. Teddy and Gilbert got into their fighting stances, looking up at the vampire. “How on earth could you two be dangerous? You seem to be more cute than tough.” Darkness seemed to be radiating off of the vampire, causing Joshua to groan and shift in his sleep. Teddy and Gilbert both looked at Joshua, then at the vampire, and then back at Joshua. Gilbert looked over at Teddy, who nodded, tapping his paw three times on the bed, which signaled Fighting Tactic #3, The Wrap it Up. They both lunged at the vampire, who was caught off guard by this, and tripped backwards, falling onto the ground. Gilbert flapped his tiny little stuffed wings over to the dresser, where he grabbed a long piece of fabric, and brought it back over to Teddy, who was poking the vampire with his sword and bopping him on the nose with his shield. “You damn Stuffies!” The vampire yelled, swatting at Teddy who easily dodged his attacks. “You are all such pests!” Teddy reached up and grabbed the fabric from Gilbert, and began wrapping the vampire up, starting from the legs. “NO!” The vampire yelled, his eyes wide. “What on earth do you think you two are up to?” Teddy continued to wrap the vampire up, reaching his arms, pinning them to his side. “Do you not know who I am?” Teddy ignored the vampire as he finished the wrapping, which had ended at the vampire’s neck. Gilbert flapped his tiny stuffed wings over to where Teddy and the vampire were, and stuffed a sock in the vampire’s mouth, making his complains muffled. Teddy and Gilbert high-fived, and began dragging the mummified vampire back towards the closet, and heaving him inside. As the vampire struggled and complained, they shut the door, causing the noise to completely stop. The battles continued on for the rest of the night. The two of them battled against large spiders, who wanted to bite Joshua and give him uncomfortable and itchy bites. The two of them made short work of them and soon tossed out the window after subjecting the spiders to Fighting Tactic #6, the Hot Cocoa.

They then fended off the Evil Witch, who wanted to take all of Joshua’s happiness, so she could make a potion to rid the world of happiness. She too was no match for Gilbert and Teddy, who caused the Witch to disappear in a puff of smoke when they used Fighting Tactic #10, Bath Time.

Finally, they fought off a bunch of small, demon-looking creatures, who were the most vicious of all of the evils they fought that night. They wanted to take the life force from Joshua and bring it back to their master so that he could live forever, but the demons were no match for Fighting Tactic #1, Tickle Time. The fighting lasted until the morning, and soon, Teddy and Gilbert watched the sunrise from Joshua’s window. They had successfully protected him once again. The two of them started their journey back towards Joshua’s bed, Teddy waddling and Gilbert flapping. As soon as the two of them got up onto the bed, they heard footsteps approaching. Saluting each other, Teddy wiggled back into Joshua’s arms, and Gilbert flapped his way over to the other Stuffies that Joshua had in his bed. As soon as the two of them stopped moving, the door opened, and Joshua’s mother came into the room.

“Joshua, it’s time to wake up,” she said. “I made pancakes, and they’re waiting for you downstairs.” Joshua slowly woke up, rubbing his eyes. He pulled Teddy in for a hug, and smiled happily.

            “Thanks Teddy.”

Conceal Her

Written by Justin Kleckner

--- Trisha---

As I sat at my desk, looking at the camera in front of me, I took a deep breath, and exhale loudly. Brushing my hair out of my face and behind my ear, I look into my mirror, and see nothing back, almost like a vampire looking for his reflection. However, I’m no vampire, I am just invisible. This has been my life for as long as I can remember. I’m a nobody, invisible to society, never meeting the standers.

“Come on Trish,” I tell myself as I stand up, pushing back my chair. “We have to get filming if you want to have enough time to edit.” I go over to a large cabinet in a dimly lit corner of my apartment, open it, and stare face to face with my makeup. Even though the apartment is a decent sized apartment, making the space seems small and cluttered due to the amount of filming lights, tripods, and makeup PR packages littered all over my apartment. I discovered YouTube when I was a sixth grader back at Oak Park Middle School, and I have been obsessed ever since. When I watched my first makeup tutorial, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to become a YouTube Beauty Vlogger. That’s how my YouTube channel came to be, because of one video, I became something. BeautyByTrisha, 900k followers, that’s what the world knows me by. Grabbing a bunch of makeup, I walk back over to the desk, set it down, and I go back to the cabinet for the brushes, beauty blenders, and makeup wipes. Once I have everything I need, I sit down at the desk, and open up my bottle of Kat von D foundation in the shade 51-Medium and the beauty blender, and begin the application process. I apply the foundation to the left side of my face, and before I move on, I look into the mirror, and I see half of a face looking back at me, the face looks up at me, its eyes dull and boring, the lips pale and cracked, and pimples covering it like a mountain range. The other half of the face is blank, invisible, just like before. I sigh and continue to apply the foundation all over my face until everything is covered and I have a full visible face. Looking into the mirror again, I see my full face, and I shake my head as I blend my foundation down my neck, so viewers don’t see who I actually am, an invisible human. Grabbing a wig cap, I tuck my thin hair in the cap and glue it down using wig glue. I place a brown, waist-length, lace-front wig on my head, the hair full and healthy looking. I conceal the lace in the front with concealer, and once I look into the mirror again, I smile. Popping in some blue contacts, I blink a few times, and I feel myself become more and more confident. I soon get to work covering up the pimples, scars, and acne with color-correction concealer until my face is clear of blemishes. I look at what eyeshadow pallet I grabbed, and I see that I have the Morphe 350Matte eyeshadow pallet laying in front of me. Opening the pallet, I see all of the beautiful neutral eyeshadow colors that I love.

“Perfect choice for today's video,” I say to myself as I do a quick neutral-toned smoky eye look. After blending for what felt like centuries, I look in the mirror, and I smile. “Perfect,” I say. After some quick eyeliner and mascara, I grab a light pink liquid lipstick and apply that on the lips, lining them with the same color lip pencil. I brush the bangs out of my face, click record and smile.

“Thank you, guys, for watching the video this week, and I’ll see you next week. Stay beautiful babies!” I blew a kiss at the screen, and I end the video. Looking into the mirror, I see me.

As I scroll through my phone, I get a notification from YouTube. Curious, I click on the notification, and I see BeautyByTrisha pop up on my screen. Getting excited, since she is my favorite YouTuber ever, I look at the title of the video, and pause. The Truth. I stare at the title for a little while longer and then click the play button. Her face pops up on my screen, and I smile.

“Hey what’s up my beauty babies? It’s Trisha, back with another video.” Taking a shaky breath, she continues. “I was having the most difficult time coming up with an idea for this week’s video, so I decided to do something a little different.” She grabs a makeup wipe and looks at it for a while before speaking again. “This is, this probably the hardest video I have ever made on my channel.” She begins taking off the makeup on one side of her face until the makeup is gone. I gasped as I looked at the screen. The was a large red splotchy birthmark on her face. “I’m not the perfect skinned beauty you all think I am. I have this huge birthmark, and it’s something that I don’t want to hide anymore. Even though this birthmark has people staring at me when I don’t have makeup on, it doesn’t mean that people see me. What they see is the birthmark. Everything wrong with me is what people see, but do they see me? No. I am invisible behind the mark.” Trisha took off the rest of the makeup and smiled weakly. “I wanted to tell you that even though there are people like that out there, you don’t need to be ashamed of who you are. You can be strong, you can show off your natural beauty, just like,” she took another shaky breath. “Just like I need to do more often. So, if you have a birthmark, flaunt it. If you have crooked teeth, smile more often. Show off the imperfections, because of those?” A small pause. “Those are what make you the amazing, beautiful babies that I know you all to be.” She held up the makeup wipe, showing off all of the makeup she had taken off. “You don’t need makeup to feel beautiful. Sure, it doesn’t hurt to wear makeup. I mean, look at me. I wear it all of the time, it’s kinda my job.” She laughed, and I laughed a little with her. “Well, that is all I have for this week. Thank you, guys, for watching the video this week, and I’ll see you next week. Stay beautiful babies!” She blew a kiss at the screen, and the video ended. I stared at the screen for a bit, before scrolling down to the comment section, and I began writing.

---Trisha---

As soon as I had uploaded the video to YouTube, I felt myself get nervous. “What if they don’t like it? What if people get angry with me for filming this? What if people will unsubscribe from me because of the birthmark? Was this a good idea?” The more questions that I asked myself, I began to feel myself go invisible again, I looked in my mirror, watching my face go invisible again. “Maybe this is for the best,” I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket, and as I pulled it out to look at the screen, I saw my hands disappear. I checked the notification, and I felt my heart plummet. It was a YouTube notification. I clicked on the screen and waited for my latest video to appear on my screen. When it did, I scrolled down to the comments and began reading.

OMG you’re so beautiful!

Don’t be sad Trisha! We’re all here for you.

Love you girlie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3

I kept reading, comment after comment after comment, all the same, encouraging positivity. I got to one from a channel named sophie8675, and it was a long one, so I paused to read it.

Trisha, the fact that you were able to make this video shows that you are one of the strongest people that I know. Most YouTubers could never make this kind of video, so the fact that you were able to not only shows me that you are beautiful and strong on the outside, you’re also beautiful and strong on the outside as well! I have been a fan for what seems likes forever, and this video proves why you have the followers that you do. Keep up the amazingness that you post, and I love you!!

After I finished reading, I felt the tears trickling down from my eyes. I immediately liked the comment and pinned it to the top of comments. I began wiping the tears from my eyes, with a hand that I could see.
